Soave is the “Borgo dei Borghi 2022”
Soave has won the “Borgo dei Borghi 2022” award. It is linked to wine in its name and raison d’être. Soave is the most beautiful village in Italy, and number one in the now historic contest the popular television program, “Kilimanjaro” (Rai 3) hosted by Camilla Raznovich, launched. It is a small town in the Veneto Region and its icon is the crenelated walls of the Castle, Soave counts 7.000 inhabitants, more or less one for each of the 7.000 hectares of Soave DOC (which are spread over there 13 municipalities located in the eastern part of the province of Verona). A successful collaboration between public and private, comment the Consorzio del Soave, the Cantina di Soave and the municipal administration.

In 2022 Italian wine starts off with the wind in its sails: in January exports +22% on 2021 
After archiving a record-breaking 2021 - with 7.1 billion euros of wine shipped to markets around the world - the first month of 2022 confirms the positive trend. In January, Italian wine exports reached 474 million euros, up 22% on January 2021 and +8.7% on 2019, the last year lived in normality. Among the main partners of Italy, Great Britain’s exploit, while China is the only one to mark a slight retreat, with Russia that, perhaps for the last time (at least in the medium term), continues on its path of growth, as reported by Istat data on foreign trade in January 2022, analyzed by WineNews. Starting, as always, from the countries geographically closest to us, Switzerland, in the first month of 2022, imported 27 million euros of Italian wine (+14% compared to January 2021), Austria 8.8 million euros (+31%) and France, especially thanks to the performance of Prosecco (which closed 2021 with 25 million bottles shipped beyond the Alps) 12.7 million euros (+42%). The favorite destination in Old Europe remains Germany, which in January imported 71 million euros of wine from Italy (+2%), in line with the figure for January 2021. The Netherlands also did well, with 15.3 million euros of imports (+13%), as did Norway, with 6.7 million euros of Italian wine purchased in January 2022 (+26%), and Sweden, with 14.6 million euros (+17%). Even better is the United Kingdom, which seems to have absorbed the news of Brexit and in January imported 50.6 million euros of Italian wine (+94.6%). Russia, as mentioned, continues to do well, with 9 million euros (+36%). Overseas, the long march of Italian wine in the United States continues, with shipments reaching 117 million euros in January 2022 (+11% on January 2021). The export trend toward Canada is also positive, with 31.5 million euros (+23%). In Asia, if on the one hand there is to be recorded the braking of China, at 6.8 million euros (-5.5% on January 2021 and -26% on January 2019), on the other hand, come confirmations from all other fronts. Japan flies at 11.8 million euros, up +34% on January 2021, South Korea imported just over 4 million euros of Italian wine (+14%), and Hong Kong 1.6 million euros (+43%).

Barolo and Barbaresco in Los Angeles
The new vintages of Barolo and Barbaresco, 2018 and 2019, will be revealed to the general public at the “Barolo & Barbaresco World Opening”, on April 28 and 29th in Los Angeles (WineNews will also be there). The Consorzio di tutela di Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe Dogliani organized the preview where 200 wine producers will meet the media, trade professionals and US wine lovers. The US is the two Piedmont wine champions’ reference market, as 18.7% of Barolo and 19% of Barbaresco bottles fly overseas every year. The “grand tasting”, which will have an area dedicated to the Additional Geographical Mentions, will be followed, on April 28, by an exclusive “Gala Dinner” in Hollywood, at the Paramount Pictures Studio, hosted by actor Billy Harris, where food and wine culture of Langa will be celebrated, as the cooks from Alba will bring to Los Angeles their tajarin.

The Spring-Summer “Previews”
Vinitaly 2022 is behind us, but many “local” events are just around the corner, in a wine “whirlwind” that is preparing for its “spring-summer” tour. The first big event is “Sicilia en Primeur” organized by Assovini Sicilia, the annual preview of Sicilian wines, with opinion leaders, influencers and Master of Wine, from April 27 to May 1 in Erice. On May 2, the Symposium “Sustainable Interactions” by SoStain Foundation, in Palermo, with, among others, the president of the Foundation Alberto Tasca, Alessio Planeta, Arianna Occhipinti, Attilio Scienza and Monica Larner, signature from Italy for “Wine Advocate”. From April 30 to May 1, Lake Garda will be the backdrop of “Corvina Manifesto - L’Anteprima del Chiaretto di Bardolino”, and on the same days, in Lucca, “Anteprima Vini della Costa Toscana” returns. From May 22 to 24 it will be the turn of “Vini ad Arte 2022” by Consorzio dei Vini di Romagna, on May 22-23 the “Roero Days” will be back, on May 25-26 it will be the turn of “Anteprima Sagrantino”, in Montefalco, and on June 6, in the Italdesign Museum in Moncalieri (Turin), “La Prima dell’Alta Langa”. From June 7 to 10 the “Abruzzo Wine Experience” is scheduled, while on June 19-20 the “Anteprima Amarone” will be held, and in Campi Flegrei, on September 8, there will be “Campania Stories - Special Edition”.
