After the cancellation of “Grandi Langhe on the road”, the format that should have brought the great wines of the Langhe to the most important squares in Italy, due to the restrictive measures in force this spring, “Grandi Langhe”, an event dedicated to Italian and foreign buyers, distributors, wine merchants and restaurateurs, will be back in its usual format, but in Turin, on January 31 and February 1, 2022. 200 Langhe and Roero wineries will present their new vintages at OGR Torino, the hub of innovation, food and wine, and culture, a strategic choice for the growth of the event that, for years, has opened up the Italian wine calendar. |

In a country where ecological transition “is necessary”, as stated by Prime Minister Draghi, the world of cooperative wine is doing its part by embracing the sustainability that increasingly accompanies consumer choices. Thus 59% of wine cooperatives have already reduced their use of chemical inputs, 52% have reduced waste and made the most of by-products, and 51% have increased their organic production in a context where organic vineyards have more than doubled in ten years and where Italy is the European leader with an area of 17.8%, compared to 14.9% in Spain and 14.7% in France. Moreover, 62% of wine cooperatives say they are in favor of accelerating along the path of ecological transition and agriculture 4.0 in the next two to three years. These data emerged from the Nomisma Wine Monitor report, at the center of the “Vivite” talk organized in Rome by the Wine Sector of the Alliance of Cooperatives, and show how sustainability is increasingly a “mantra” also in consumer choices. In Italy, 1 out of 10 regular wine consumers has bought sustainable wine in the last year, and above all 8 out of 10 Italians are willing to spend more to have a bottle of certified sustainable wine, partly because 38% believe that sustainable wine has superior organoleptic qualities. “Sustainability is not a trend”, said Luca Rigotti, coordinator of the wine sector of Alleanza Cooperative Agroalimentari, as well as head of CopaCogeca and president of Mezzacorona, an example of excellence in Italian and Trentino wine cooperation, “and the cooperative instrument is particularly suited to this new challenge, not least because it has the possibility of acting on the various stages of the supply chain. Certainly, our companies need to be dynamic and they need the resources provided by the NRP. But Europe also needs to apply the principle of reciprocity, stressed the Undersecretary for Agriculture with responsibility for wine, Gian Marco Centinaio, “because if we ask for the environment to be respected, we cannot then allow products to be imported from other countries where, in the end, nothing is sustainable. We need the same rules”. |

Environmental sustainability, which in recent years has become an objective common to the entire agricultural world, has been a necessity for wine - felt by both consumers and producers - for some time, at least since the end of the 20th century. It is not surprising, therefore, that the area of vineyards converted to organic production in the world has grown at a rate of 13% per year between 2005 and 2019, as shown by the “World Organic Vineyard” report by the OIV, headed by Professor Luigi Moio. As of 2019, there were 454,000 “organic” hectares in 63 countries on every continent, 6.2% of the world’s vineyards. In terms of specific weight, European countries are those where the share of organic vineyards is on average the highest, with Italy in the lead, where organic viticulture accounts for 15% of the total area under vines, followed by France and Austria, at 14%. |

The real quality of a harvest and the ability of producers to interpret it can only ever be seen in the glass. But the estimates of those who harvest the grapes are still of value, especially for those wines of high lineage that build much of their prestige on the goodness of the vintage. The sentiment for the 2021 harvest is decidedly positive: “according to the first estimates there has been at least a 15% drop in quantity compared to 2020 - comments Fabrizio Bindocci, President of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino - and all producers have registered a drop in production, but everyone agrees on the very high quality of the vintage. This is also confirmed by the analytical data. It is an excellent wine, I would say perfect”. Another great vintage, therefore, in power, the one that will arrive on the market in 2026, while Montalcino prepares to welcome “Benvenuto Brunello”, that, from this year, moves to the middle of autumn, with edition no. 30 dedicated to the debut of the 2017 vintage and the 2016 Riserva scheduled in the Monumental Complex of Sant’Agostino from November 19th to 28th. “The 2016 vintage was already superlative and the 2016 Riserva is even better”, stresses Bindocci, “and the 2017 Brunello will reserve some nice surprises”. |
