Italian wine shops, declining business
In the first half of 2025, 50% of Italian wine merchants reported a drop in sales compared to 2025, and only 16.7% a growth. Situation that improves slightly, but not by much, if we look only at the summer. In which, in any case, 50% point to still whites as the protagonists of the season. They are followed by sparkling wines with 25 percent, rosé wines with 16.7% (but indicated shrinking by 58.3% of the sample) and reds only at 8.3%. So say the results of a survey by Vinarius, the Association of Italian Wine Shops, led by Andrea Terraneo, which represents more than 120 members throughout the country.

The industry proposes an institutional campaign to defend wine. Lollobrigida: “at your side”
A synergistic communication campaign, “broad and articulate”, with the fundamental support of institutions, starting with the Ministry of Agriculture led by Francesco Lollobrigida, and with the representations of the wine supply chain, to act “in a cohesive manner to protect the cultural, social and economic identity of wine, restoring to it the role it deserves in the construction of a mature and conscious approach to consumption,” with messages capable of “bringing the issue back within a context of scientific truth, balance and responsibility”. This is what some of the most important organizations in the world of wine and agriculture, from Federvini to Alleanza delle Cooperative Italiane, from Assoenologi to Federdoc, among others, are asking for, and in recent days they have written a joint letter to Lollobrigida, thanking the Minister “for the constant attention and concrete closeness she has always shown towards the national wine sector”, and to urge, precisely, a campaign in support of the sector, in particular because of the growing concern about the many initiatives that increasingly link wine, in a negative world, to the issue of health, in international debates, also, or especially, in view of the “Political Declaration on Non-Communicable Diseases (Ncds) whose negotiation process, started in the spring of this year, will end with the adoption of the new text on September 25, 2025”, the letter states. A letter to which the minister responded positively, “It is an honor to be recognized as a point of reference for an industry, such as Italian wine producers. But honors also come with burdens, and I have never backed down. I will continue to stand by them so that wine is not criminalized. Institutions have the task of informing, not terrorizing. And we will continue to affirm that responsible consumption is necessary, but we will not take part in what has the aspects of a crusade animated mainly by those who know little or nothing about wine”, Lollobrigida wrote on social media. Words commented positively by the Wine Supply Chain Table, coordinated by Piero Mastroberardino, vice president of Federvini.

Harvest and stocks, Ciatti speaks
As the first grapes in Italy begin to be harvested, in the southern hemisphere it is already time to assess the 2025 vintage harvests. Which were, reports the “Global Market Report” (July 2025) by Ciatti, among the world’s largest bulk wine brokers, lower than average in Chile, in line in Argentina and South Africa, and higher in Australia and New Zealand. In the Northern Hemisphere, however, only California looks set for a below-average harvest, mainly due to an extended phase out of some vineyards. “Wine and grape buyers are buying only when it is really necessary”. explains Ciatti, who adds how “currently this need generally concerns limited volumes”. The prediction is that, in Italy as elsewhere, “surplus production is likely to be significant in some areas after the 2025 harvest”.

Italian food and wine B Corp grows
The Italian food sector is confirming its leading role in the transition to more sustainable and responsible business models. According to data released by B Lab Italia, the nonprofit organization that coordinates the B Corp movement in our country (which certifies companies that choose to operate according to rigorous criteria of environmental sustainability, social responsibility and transparency), and updated as of June 26, 2025, the number of B Corp certified companies in the food sector has grown 166% in the last three years, reaching 30 active entities. These companies alone generate about 20% of the total turnover of all Italian B Corp companies. In Italy, the movement now has 352 certified enterprises from all sectors, with more than 45,000 employees and an aggregate turnover of more than 19 billion euros. Prominent among them is the contribution of the wine sector, which stands out for its commitment to regenerative agricultural practices, biodiversity protection and land enhancement. There are now 8 B Corp-certified Italian wineries: from Perlage Winery (Veneto) to Feudi di San Gregorio (Campania); from Avignonesi (Tuscany) to Tasca d’Almerita (Sicily); from Cielo e Terra (Veneto) to Perrini (Puglia), from Marcel Zanolari (Lombardy), to Venturini Baldini (Emilia-Romagna).

Wine tourism according to “Titan Travel”
The best “hot spot” for wine tourism in the world is South Africa, with a “rating” of 8.38 out of 10, ahead of Portugal, with 7.75, and Italy, with 7. This is said by the curious ranking of the British travel agency “Titan Travel”, made by “comparing the average cost of a bottle of wine, the number of organized wine tours per square kilometer, the prices of typical tastings, and search interest on Google”. With the trend of wine tourism set to grow further …

“Stealing Beauty” and the beauty of the Tuscan countryside
There is the landscape of Tuscany, with the Chianti Classico hills, vineyards, olive groves and cypresses; there is the carefree freedom of youth; there is sex and love; and there is a beautiful, first-time actress, Liv Tyler, who, with this film, will become famous; but, above all, there is the brilliant eye of Bernardo Bertolucci, one of Italy’s greatest directors: “Stealing Beauty”, an iconic 1995 film celebrating its 30th birthday, was the star of a special screening (supported by the Chianti Classico Consortium) in the unique setting of Piazza del Campo in Siena. Special guests included Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons and producer Thomas Jeremy. With the great British actor saying in an interview with WineNews that he loves our cuisine and our wine, so much so that “at home I eat Italian food and drink Italian wine”.
