Boscarelli invests in the future
Boscarelli, one of the leading producers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, led by Paola Corradi alongside her sons Luca and Nicolò De Ferrari, is looking to the future by investing: the company recently acquired Villa Fiorelli in Cervognano, Montepulciano, a prestigious property that will be transformed into a hospitality venue (complete with a wine cellar), surrounded by a total of 14 hectares of land, 8.5 of which are planted with vines (most of which are dedicated to the production of Vino Nobile). The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, but the estimated value per hectare of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano vineyard (depending on the age and quality of the vineyard, ed.) ranges from 150,000 to 200,000 euros.

Export, Italian wine recovers slightly in April: 2.3 billion in value (-6.8% on 2025)
Italian wine exports continue to regain ground, albeit at a slower pace than in the previous report and still remaining in negative territory compared to 2025. According to Istat data analyzed by WineNews, from January through April 2026, Italian wine exports reached 2.33 billion euros in value, down 6.8% from the same period in 2025, with volumes totaling 640.7 million liters (down 3.7%). The first four months of 2026 show better figures than the previous quarter, when the total decline in value had reached -8.2% and in volume -4%. And while the situation remains difficult, as evidenced by inventory levels in wineries, the signs of recovery should not be underestimated, considering that in January 2026 the “report” showed a decline of -18.7% in value. The United States, the No. 1 market for Italian wine, imported 564.2 million euros’ worth of wine; the year-over-year comparison with 2025 remains significantly negative (-15.4%), although it has recovered from the -20.5% recorded in March. The same applies to volumes, at 111.7 million liters, which improved from -8.4% in the quarter to -5.5% in April. Germany, the leading European partner, recorded €351 million in exports (-6.8%), down from March, while the United Kingdom rebounded to €213.3 million (-6.1%). While Canada remained stable in the first four months of 2025 at 125.5 million euros, Switzerland saw a further decline (-12.7%) to 114.5 million euros. On the European front, good news comes from France at 100.5 million euros (+0.9%), while the Netherlands significantly improved its quarterly performance, totaling exports of 77.1 million euros (-4.2%). Exports to Belgium stood at 65.6 million euros (-9.8%), and Sweden significantly narrowed the gap compared to 2025, now at just under -1.5%, for a total of 62.3 million euros. Russia has been surpassed; with over 59 million euros in imports, it is up 28% compared to the same period in 2025, though growth has slowed relative to the quarter’s overall figure. Turning to the Asian market, Japan improved in April, approaching 2025 levels (53.9 million euros, -1.1%); exports to China in the first four months of 2026, however, stood at 26.4 million euros, up 9.7%. Among emerging markets, Brazil continued its strong performance, reaching 13.4 million euros (up 17.7%), while Australia saw a decline (18.2 million euros, down 13.2%).

The future of Italian wine, from market to communication
To try to envision the future, the wine industry must start with the challenges it is currently facing. Take, for example, the “alcohol and health” debate, in which, according to Piero Antinori, wine “needs to be better explained; we need to communicate more: today, 30 billion bottles are produced worldwide each year. It would be enough for each producer to “levy” a few cents per bottle to put together a large communications budget” to “launch a global educational campaign”. But also, as Sandro Boscaini points out, we have been “too inward-looking as a wine industry”, so “enough with self-praise, enough with egocentrism: we must approach wine with a modern perspective, that is, with more lightheartedness”. Of course, climate change and its effects, argues Angelo Gaja, and the decline in consumption, which “we shouldn’t worry too much about. Certainly, in traditional markets, consumption may still decline, but that’s because it’s still high”, and “we must explore other markets, in Asia and Africa, where consumers may drink higher-alcohol beverages, and establish the value of wine”. And “if today the market is looking for more white wines, more sparkling wines, and lighter wines, we’ll follow the market”, notes Fausto Maculan, “just as we’ve always done”. These are the reflections of the “four tenors” of Italian wine, from “VinoVip Cortina” by “Civiltà del Bere”, which also honored Marilisa Allegrini with the “Khail Award.

Europe to the U.S.: remove tariffs on wine
Europe has expressed to the United States its intention to exempt wine from tariffs. The European Commission has drawn up a list of hundreds of products it would like to see excluded from the 15% tariffs provided for in the EU-U.S. Turnberry Agreement, and among these, wine, sparkling wines (for which the United States is the No. 1 market and, from January through April 2026, imported Italian wine worth 564.2 million euros, according to Istat data published by WineNews, ed.), as well as brandy, cider, beer, and spirits such as whiskey, gin, rum, vodka, and liqueurs. In the document, previewed by Euractiv, the European Commission argues that the EU has already fulfilled its commitments under the tariff agreement by eliminating tariffs on hundreds of U.S. products.
