When the harvest is “volcanic”
Their wines are excellent because of their distinct traits, such as aromatic intensity and longevity combining fruity and mineral notes. We are talking about “volcanic” wines, that is, the wines coming from vineyards whose roots are in lava origin soils. They are part of the European project HEVA, Heroes of Europe Volcanic Agriculture. The main denominations include Santorini wines from the Greek island of Santorini, and Soave and Lessini Durello wines from Veneto, whose Consortiums and wineries have drawn up a balance sheet on the 2024 harvest (in more detail).

CMO 2024-2025, the provisional ranking
To improve wine sales in third countries, promotion, even at an institutional level, represents a great investment, especially for a country like Italy which is among the world’s wine “powers”, thanks to exports. And yesterday, the Ministry of Agriculture published the provisional ranking of the national projects of the 2024/2025 campaign, relating to the CMO measure “Promotion in the markets of third countries”, a strategic tool for companies in the wine sector that can receive funding of up to 50% for information and promotion activities of PDO, PGI, sparkling wines and varietal wines in non-EU markets; in particular, 12 projects have been approved, involving over 100 Italian wine producing companies, and which include a series of promotional initiatives aimed at promoting excellent Italian wine products in 20 foreign countries, assigning contributions of 28.5 million euros, out of a total investment that will be made by wine companies and teams amounting to 66.5 million euros. Compared to previous years, according to the Ministry, the approval takes place promptly to allow adequate planning of the activities. “With this provision, the Ministry of Agriculture has allocated all the resources available for the current year. Our objective is to improve the competitiveness of the wine sector through the opening, diversification and consolidation of foreign markets and enhance exports. Italian wine is excellence to be defended and promoted in the world and one of the most important symbols of our production and our culture”, said the Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida. The news was welcomed positively by Federvini, who explains that although provisional, the published ranking deserves to be applauded.

The “VITÆVINO” campaign
Wine is tradition and culture, moderation, community and sustainability: this is the meaning of the declaration underlying the campaign, an initiative launched by all the main players in the wine sector, who call together workers in the sector, enthusiasts and others who, by signing the declaration on vitaevino.org, can “give voice to moderation”. The campaign, launched in the EU and presented in Italy, at the Ministry of Agriculture, in the presence of all the leaders of the supply chain representatives and Minister Lollobrigida, among the signatories, “intends to promote the legitimate and sustainable place of wine in our society and invites to distinguish between alcohol abuse and moderate wine consumption. And to recognize the important socio-economic role that wine plays in our economy, rural environment and culture”.

The “Apennine Bubbles” district has been created in Umbria
The “Apennine Bubbles” district has been created by the mountain viticulture project that is looking to the future of sparkling wine production in the heart of Umbria. The project now covers 8 hectares of vineyards located at an altitude between 850 and 1.000 meters above sea level, in the Gubbio area, which is going to increase. A project that is a way to relaunch the mountainous part of the territory. The ideas have been written down and finalized in the research project “Spum.e” (acronym for “Spumantistica eugubina”), presented recently in Gubbio (details in depth). The project has laid the foundations to create the Umbrian Sparkling Wine District, which will evaluate the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the sparkling wine bases production in the Eugubino Gualdese Apennine area. The area is historically well-known for its production of quality wines, financed by the Umbria Region through PSR, carried out by researchers from the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Milan, including the collaboration of pioneering wineries such as Semonte of the Colaiacovo family, and partners such as Arnaldo Caprai, symbol of Umbrian viticulture, led by Marco Caprai, and Leaf (a consultancy company for the sector).

Masciarelli acquires the “Valori” company
Masciarelli Tenute Agricole, a winery symbol of Abruzzo wine and Italian wine, led by Marina Cvetic and Miriam Masciarelli, has acquired the organic company “Chiamami quando Piove – Valori” (26 hectares of vineyard in the municipalities of Controguerra and Sant’Omero, in the province of Teramo, ed.): after having taken care of its distribution since 2005, the year in which the distribution network known as Gianni’s Selection was created, the Abruzzo company decided to acquire the Teramo winery, due to the profound commonality of philosophies between the two realities”.

Chardonnay with Teas
The first field experimentation of Chardonnay vine plants created with Teas (Assisted Evolution Technologies that aim to genetically improving a plant, first and foremost resistance) was born in Italy, in Veneto. A project carried out by the agricultural genetics group coordinated by Mario Pezzotti from the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Verona and made possible also thanks to Edivite. The field is 250 square meters large and is located in the experimentation vineyard of the University of Verona in San Floriano, Valpolicella. The experiment involves the planting of 5 Tea Chardonnay plants and 5 control plants with the aim of verifying the resistance to one of the main pathogens of the vine, downy mildew and, consequently, the possibility of a lower use of plant protection products (in depth).

Italian wine in the US, consumption down
The United States is the most important market for Italian wine exports. However, the news is not at all encouraging as far as consumption goes. The UIV - Unione Italiana Vini Observatory, based on Sipsource, that August was “one of the worst months in the last two years (-13%) for wine sales in general”, and the cumulative figure from January is down -8% in volume. Italy shows positive signs thanks to sparkling wines. The 8 month partial for Italy, according to the UIV evaluations on the American distributors platform, was -5.7% in volume and -4.4% in value.
