Marco Simonit’s “lesson” at Harvard
From taking care of the vineyards of many of the most important and prestigious companies in the world and in Italy to “lecturer” in one of the most illustrious universities in the world, Harvard: so did Marco Simonit, creator, with Pierpaolo Sirch, of the “Simonit & Sirch Vine Master Pruners”, among the speakers at the “Vine to Mind: Decanting Wine’s Future with Data Science & AI”, which brought together in Boston luminaries of the wine world, pioneering minds from the world of research, and managers of major wineries. Climate change, vineyards moving north and to higher ground at the center of his talk (in more detail).

Americans in Italy, food & good wine before culture and art. Trends from the “Fancy Food”
90% of U.S. tourists indicate Italian food and wine as the reason of choice for spending their vacations in Italy, with food and wine topping the list of the most popular “beauties” among star & stripes vacationers, more than art and culture: this emerges from the results of a survey, carried out by Coldiretti and the specialized platform I Love Italian Food (Ilif). The survey, done on a sample of more than 1,000 U.S. citizens who visited our country, was released at the “Summer Fancy Food” 2024, in New York, the most important U.S. trade show dedicated to specialty foods. The event was also an opportunity to relaunch the candidacy of our cuisine as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage Site, with Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida cutting the ribbon of the Italian Pavilion, the largest in the international area, with more than 300 companies. But Italian sounding remains a major concern: in the U.S., our fake products are worth 40 billion, with cheese leading the way. According to the Coldiretti and I Love Italian Food (Ilif) survey, an association whose mission is to publicize and defend true Italian food and wine culture around the world, when asked to indicate the three main reasons for choosing a vacation in Italy, food and wine got 90% of the preferences, clearly surpassing art and culture (77%) and history and archaeology (65%), which precedes natural beauty (61%). In fifth place were visits to family and friends (55%). Exports to the U.S. of products-symbols of Italian food style over the past 10 years have recorded increases in value even in triple digits: from +67% for olive oil to +193% for pasta. Sales of pummarola & co. in the States have practically tripled (+133%) but cheeses, from Parmigiano Reggiano Dop to Grana Padano Dop, have also almost doubled with +86%, according to Coldiretti analysis of Istat data. And wine is also increasingly present on American tables with a 63% increase in value. But the iconic product remains olive oil, with the United States overtaking Spain as the world’s second largest consumer, with 375,000 tons, and by 2030 could even surpass Italy.

Chianti Classico, one step closer to Unesco
“The landscape of the Chianti Classico villa-farm system” is officially in the running for Unesco recognition, with the candidacy dossier having arrived in Paris, with great satisfaction expressed by the Foundation for the Protection of the Chianti Classico Territory. An important step, for the enhancement of an icon of that wine territory, among the most beautiful and intact in the world, that of the Black Rooster, defined by Piero Antinori as “an earthly paradise” for wine production (with Chianti Classico increasingly rewarded by critics and the market, ed.), which makes “culture fall in love”, as recounted in the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Chianti Classico Consortium by Eugenia Falini, scientific head of the Unesco candidacy. “I express my satisfaction with today’s decision by the Governing Council of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO to send the candidacy of “The Landscape of the Chianti Classico Farm-Villa System” to UNESCO for preliminary evaluation by the advisory bodies for inclusion in the World Heritage List. It is a candidacy that enhances an identity landscape of our nation, which has the full support of the Ministry of Culture”, commented the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano.

Symbola rewards Arnaldo Caprai
If the recent news has turned the spotlight on situations of exploitation of the weakest workers, usually foreigners, in our country there are, fortunately, positive examples of companies that invest in legality and integration: such as the Arnaldo Caprai winery, in Umbria, which, in Mantua, received from the Symbola Foundation, a network of Italian excellence, the “Cohesion is Competition” award for its commitment to political refugees. Over the years, the winery has focused heavily on inclusion, employing more than 200 political asylum seekers.

The best wine lists by “Wine Spectator”: Italy between top confirmations and new entries
There is no such thing as quality dining without a first-rate wine list and vice versa, an aspect obviously well known to Italy, which excels on both fronts. But there are those who manage to show off more than others with sought-after “wine lists” that meet requirements of value, depth and variety. This can be seen in the “Restaurant Award” by “Wine Spectator”, the iconic U.S. magazine that, since 1981, has awarded the world’s best restaurant wine lists. In the “Grand Awards”, the most coveted category, Italy confirms the names of Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence, Heinz Beck’s La Pergola at Rome Cavalieri, Ristorante Cracco in Milan, La Ciau del Tornavento in Treiso, Antica Bottega del Vino in Verona, and Il Poeta Contadino in Alberobello. Two Italian new entries for the “Best of Award of Excellence” were “Cannavacciuolo Le Cattedrali” restaurant in Asti and Osteria del Viandante in Rubiera (in more detail).

For the record
Veronesi (Signorvino) invests in Sardinia
More and more wine merchants, with the Signorvino Group’s growth unabated (38 outlets to date between Italy and abroad), more and more wine producers. The Veronesi family, at the head of the Oniverse Group (formerly Calzedonia), continues to invest on the production side. And so, after Tenimenti Leone, in Lazio, and La Giuva, in Valpolicella, and while waiting to inaugurate the winery in Trentodoc land, probably by the end of the year, and other important and valuable acquisitions that will arrive by the summer, it inaugurated the Podere Guardia Grande winery, in Alghero.
