It’s official: no Vinitaly in 2021
It’s official. Vinitaly will not be held in 2021, as WineNews Rumors reported. An official statement from Veronafiere confirmed that edition number 54 of Vinitaly will be held in 2022 in Verona, from April 10th to 13th. The tenth edition of OperaWine with Wine Spectator, however, has been confirmed, at least for now, and will take place on June 19th and 20th in Verona. There will also be a special event, strictly b2b, from October 16th to 18th. It was definitely a painful decision, but the entire supply chain shared it with Veronafiere, including: Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), Federvini, Assoenologi, Federdoc, Confagricoltura, Coldiretti, Cia/Agricoltori, Alleanza delle Cooperative and Copagri.

Wine producers and Consortia on Vinitaly postponed to 2021
Postponing Vinitaly to 2022 was in the air (WineNews Rumors reported the official news). The Italian wine world regretfully accepted the sad news, as it is the number one wine event in the sector and the most important tool for the business. Not being able to experience it live is a symptom of the situation linked to the Pandemic, which is still complex and challenging. Everyone is also heaving a bitter sigh of relief, while fully supporting Veronafiere’s decision, because they realize it would inevitably have had less impact, been difficult to manage and weaker, mainly due to the limitations still in place today at International and national levels. Some people are now encouraging institutions to move more definitely to support the exhibition system, though they like and agree with Veronafiere’s choice to confirm “OperaWine 2021”, the great tasting event signed by “Wine Spectator”, to be held on June 19th and 20th, because it is smaller and more manageable (WineNews overheard indiscretions indicating it will not be held at Palazzo della Gran Guardia but, rightly so, in the much larger space of the former Fruit and Vegetable Market, and a selection of high-level International trade companies will be present, ed.). Plus, it will coincide with “La Prima” at the Verona Arena, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, Aida, conducted by Riccardo Muti. These two events held at the same time will be a special occasion for International communication. Veronafiere was forced to make a decision they didn’t want to make - and the organizations of the entire supply chain agreed with their choice as the Italian wine producers and Consortiums commented positively to WineNews. Some emphasized that this is the second year the great wine fairs have had to be postponed (ProWein was postponed months ago to 2022, and we are waiting to hear about Vinexposium’s decisions on “Vinexpo Wine Paris”, currently scheduled from June 14th -16th, but still at high risk).

Rosé, a growing trend. The best expressions in the world
The best rosé wine in the world is Cuvée Charlotte de La Madrague, and it comes from Côtes de Provence, France. The best Italian one, instead, comes from Abruzzo, and it is Terzini Rosato Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo from Terzini winery. It is also one of the two “Grand Gold Medals” of Italy, together with Il Casato Pinot Grigio Rosato of Schenk Group. Which also wins one of the 20 “Gold Medals” (with Amicone Pinot Gris Rosé), a recognition also achieved by renowned wineries of the Italian wine such as Marisa Cuomo, Leone De Castris, Masciarelli, Piera Martellozzo, Fantini Vini Group (formerly Farnese Vini), Monte del Frà and others.  These are the verdicts of the “Rosé Selection of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles”, dedicated to the rosé phenomenon by one of the oldest and most prestigious international competitions. It should have been held in Italy, in Abruzzo, one of the noble homelands of Italian rosé wines, but instead, due to the pandemic, it was held in Brussels. A phenomenon, the one of rosé wines, which, from 2002 to today, has registered a 40% increase in consumption, going from 18 to 26 million hectoliters in the world, with France, Italy, Spain and USA which alone, remember the organizers of the “Concours Mondial de Bruxelles”, cover 75% of the worldwide production.

Biondi Santi, the debut of large formats
Already cult items, the bottles of Brunello di Montalcino from Tenuta Greppo Biondi Santi, where the myth of Brunello di Montalcino was born at the end of the nineteenth century, have always been produced “only” in the classic 0.75 liter size. Today, things are changing, because now there is also the Magnum format, which makes its debut with the extraordinary 2015 vintage, and which will also be accompanied by very few 3 and 6 liter bottles for Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2013. The CEO Giampiero Bartolini: “extraordinary feedback from collectors and wine-lovers”.
